To freewheel is to ride a bicycle, or drive a vehicle, down a hill without using power from your legs or the engine. On a bike, you stop pushing the pedals and let the wheels carry you. In a car, you are not using the engine to pull you along; you are just rolling. The picture is simple: the wheels run freely. People sometimes stretch it to mean “just coasting along” in life, but the core use is this physical one — downhill, no pedaling, no engine work. It is a fairly informal, everyday word if you ride bikes.
