Picture a heavy bell in a tower. Someone swings it, and the sound does not happen once and stop — it rolls out over the roofs in , one after another, loud enough that the whole town hears it without trying to. Everything peal does grows out of that picture. It can be the rolling sound itself, the act of making it, or the whole set of bells that produces it. And any other noise that behaves the same way can borrow it: thunder that keeps rolling after the flash, an organ filling a hall, a room full of laughter that will not stop.

Wiktionary traces peal to Middle English pele, peil, probably a shortened form of apel (appeal), from Old French apel, 'an appeal; the pealing of bells'. The old idea of calling out to people sits close to the modern picture: a peal is sound sent out so that everyone hears it.

Wiktionary 記載 peal 來自中古英語 pele、peil，很可能是 apel（appeal）省掉第一個音節的結果，再往上是古法語 apel，意思是「呼求」，同時也用來指敲鐘。「呼求」這個老意思，跟今天的畫面貼得很近：鐘聲本來就是在叫人——把大家召集起來、把消息送出去。所以 peal 一直帶著「送出去給人聽見」的味道。
