A secret set of letters or numbers that you type into a computer or app to prove who you are and get access to a system.

Picture a secret word you must produce to be let through — the guard won't open the gate until you say the right one. 'Password' is literally the word that lets you 'pass'. Today it's most often the string you type to log in; the older picture is the spoken that gets you past a guard.
可以想成一個你必須說出來才能被放行的祕密字眼——你不說對，門口的人就不讓你過。Password 字面就是「讓你通過（pass）的字（word）」。今天它最常指你登入時打進去的那串密碼；比較舊的畫面則是對著守衛說出、好讓你通關的暗語。
