'Pacific' comes from Latin 'pacificus' = peace-making: 'pax' (peace) + '-ficus' from 'facere' (to make). It literally means 'making peace' — the calm of someone who wants no fight. (Magellan named the Pacific Ocean this way in 1519 for its calm.)
