    An ode is a poem — and sometimes a song — written to lift a person or a thing up. The poet speaks to someone or something (a person, a city, a season, even a jar) and praises it, or thinks aloud about it with a serious, singing voice. The famous English odes, such as Keats writing to a , are long and careful, not a little rhyme on a birthday card. In everyday talk people sometimes smile and say “an ode to coffee” for any warm piece of writing that celebrates a small thing; that is a loose, later use. The core idea stays: praise in the shape of a poem.
