「novelist」就是「寫小說的人」，中文說小說家。可以想成英文有一個小零件 -ist，把一門手藝變成做這門手藝的人：art 變 artist、piano 變 pianist、science 變 scientist，novel 就變 novelist。同一排還有 poet（詩人）、playwright（劇作家），而 writer 範圍最大（寫書、寫故事、寫報導的人都算），author 則常用來指「某一本書的作者」。要注意英文的 novel 指的是「長篇小說」，所以寫短篇的人一般說 short story writer，不會說 novelist。
