Neon is a chemical element (symbol Ne): a colourless gas, found in tiny amounts in the air, that does not like to join with other elements. Send electricity through it in a glass tube and it glows a bright reddish-orange, which is why old shop signs used it. That is the science sense. In everyday talk, people stretch neon to mean any fierce, glowing colour — neon pink, neon green — even when the light is not this gas at all. Chemists keep the strict meaning; clothes shops and teenagers often mean the colour. Both uses are real; they are not the same thing.
