    Neonatal means about a baby in the first days and weeks after birth. Hospitals have neonatal units for newborns who need extra care. Doctors and nurses use this word all the time; ordinary families more often say newborn or just born. It is an adjective: neonatal care, the neonatal period. Though actually, the line is a little blurry — some medical writing treats neonatal as the first 28 days, and then they switch to other words. You do not need that number for everyday reading, but it is why a neonatal nurse is not simply “any nurse who works with children”.
