One way to hold muted: someone has turned the dial down a notch. A blanket laid over a sound, a hand resting on the strings, a little grey stirred into the paint. Whatever is underneath — a voice, a colour, a feeling — is still there and still itself. It simply comes out softer than it would on its own, and it does not reach as far.
