Hold the thing itself: a short stem with a round cap pushing up out of the ground, a shape that was not there yesterday evening and is standing there this morning. The verb takes exactly that — not the taste, not the cooking, but the overnight appearing — and lends it to anything that swells or multiplies faster than people expected.
