Think of soft material pressed into a shaped container and left until it holds that shape on its own. Both meanings stand at the end of that action: the thing lifted out of the mould, and the long shaped strip that runs along an edge. In each one the word names material that has been given a fixed profile - never the tool that gave it. The tool is the mould.
