You can think of 'moral' as everything that lives on the map of right and wrong — the inner sense that tells good behaviour from bad. From that one map come the adjective (to do with right and wrong, or a person who lives by it), the noun 'morals' (a person's own standards), and the 'moral' of a story (the right-and-wrong lesson it leaves you with).
