You can think of minor-league as pointing at a level on a ladder, not at a quality. American baseball is built in floors: the Major Leagues at the top, and the Minor Leagues underneath, full of teams and players working their way up. To be minor-league is to stand on one of those lower floors, in the same sport, playing the same game, just not where the lights are brightest.
可以想成 minor-league 指的是「梯子上的某一層」，而不是在打分數。美國棒球是一層一層疊起來的：最上面是 Major Leagues（大聯盟），底下就是 Minor Leagues（小聯盟），裡面都是正在往上爬的球隊和球員。說某個東西 minor-league，就是把它放在比較下面那幾層：同一個運動、同一種比賽，只是還沒站在燈光最亮的地方。這個「在下面那一層」的畫面，後來被整個搬去形容棒球以外的人和事。
