Picture the day as an arc running from sunrise to sunset. Midday is the point right at the top of that arc: the sun is overhead, the morning has just finished, the afternoon has not quite begun, and the clock is at or near twelve. The word is built from mid- (middle) + day, so it literally points at the centre of the day rather than at a precise minute.
