The time in the morning when the sky first gets light — when night seems to break and day begins. Same neighbourhood as dawn. Daybreak is a little more like a picture (the day breaking open); dawn is the more common everyday word. You often hear at daybreak and before daybreak in stories, camping talk, and weather reports. Nearby: sunrise is later, when the sun itself shows. First light, dawn, and daybreak sit together; noon is hours away. It is one word, not a sentence about a day that broke.
