One way to hold mezzanine is as a half floor: a level slipped in between two proper floors, too low to be the next storey and too high to belong to the one below. It does not fill the whole space, so it looks down over what is beneath it. Once you can see that half floor, every other use is the same shape put somewhere else — into a theatre, into a loan, into a machine.

Borrowed from French mezzanine and Italian mezzanino, from mezzano 'middle', from Latin medianus and medius 'middle'. The word has said 'in the middle' from the start.
