Something menacing makes you expect something unpleasant — a threat hanging in the air, even if nothing bad has happened yet. A dog’s low sound can be menacing. A quiet smile can be menacing if it does not match the eyes. Weather, film music, a message with no name: all can feel menacing. It comes from the verb menace, “to threaten.” Though actually, it is a bit stronger and more about atmosphere than scary. Scary can be a sudden jump in a film; menacing is the feeling that harm is on its way. You can use it of people, looks, sounds, and even of a silence.
