You can think of materially as pointing at the side of something that has weight. Material is the stuff a thing is made of: you can touch it, and you can put it on a scale. Add -ly and you get a way of looking: look at the part that has substance. One road from that picture leads to money and possessions, because that is the part of a life you can count. The other road leads to size of effect: a difference with weight is one big enough to move a decision. Both roads share the same idea — not empty, but heavy enough to matter.
materially 可以想成在指「有分量的那一面」。material 本來是做東西的材料，摸得到，也秤得出來。加上 -ly，就變成「從有分量的那一面來看」。往一條路走，看的是錢和財產，因為那是生活裡數得出來的部分。往另一條路走，看的是差別夠不夠重，重到會讓人改變決定。兩條路共用同一個畫面：不是空的，是有重量的。
