You can think of it as the plain '-er' picture: the person on the receiving end of learning. Not the one who teaches, not the one who already knows — the one still taking it in.
learn 加上 -er 之後最直白的那個人：正在學的那一位。教室裡有兩種角色，一種是給出知識的（teacher），一種是接收的——learner 就是後者。它有一個很重要的言外之意：learner 是「還沒到位」的狀態，正在路上、還會出錯、還需要練習。所以這個字既中性又帶著一點寬容：說某人是 learner，等於先替他的錯誤留了空間。
