One way to picture introduce: something is outside, and you lead it in through the door for the first time. A plant carried to an island, a rule brought into a company, a stranger walked into a circle of friends — the shape is always the same. Someone does the leading, the thing was not here before, and after the moment it belongs inside.

Latin introducere 'to lead in, bring in', from intro- 'inward, to the inside' + ducere 'to lead'. The 'bring something in' use is the older one in English (early 15c.); the familiar 'make two people known to each other' sense only appears around 1650s — so the leading-in picture came first and the social use grew out of it.
