To intercede is to speak up for someone who is in trouble, hoping they will not be punished — or not punished so hard. You stand between the angry person and the one who did wrong, and you ask them to be kinder. A parent might intercede with a teacher. A friend might intercede with the boss. It is a rather formal word; in daily life people say “put in a good word” or “ask them to go easy.” You intercede for someone. You do not “intercede them.” The old picture is “to go between.”
