To inscribe something is to put words onto a surface with care — cut into stone, stamp into a coin, engrave into metal. The words are meant to last, which is why the verb belongs with monuments, rings, trophies, and old coins. Though actually, people also inscribe books: they write a short personal message in the front when they give the book as a gift. In geometry there is another, more technical use: you inscribe one shape inside another so that it fits and touches. For most , the writing-on-a-surface sense is the one that matters.
