    To inhibit something means to slow it down or stop it from happening or growing fully - a chemical can inhibit the growth of bacteria, and a strict teacher's constant criticism can inhibit a student's confidence. It can also describe people: if you feel inhibited, you feel too shy, nervous, or to act naturally, as if something inside you is holding you back.
