Horrific means extremely bad — so bad it you or upsets you deeply. A horrific crash, a horrific crime, horrific injuries. It is a strong word. If you use it for a boring class or a bad sandwich, it sounds like you are shouting. Horrible is the everyday cousin and is weaker; horrific sits closer to horror, to something that makes the stomach drop. News reports and serious talk use it more than casual chat, though people do reach for it when they want drama.
