A hailstorm is a spell of bad weather in which a lot of hail falls at once — dark cloud, wind, and then hard ice hitting roofs, cars, and plants. It often does not last long, but it can tear leaves and leave dents in metal. We say “a hailstorm,” like rainstorm or snowstorm. You reach for this word when the ice, not the rain, is the main thing that fell.
