You can think of it as: the 'good' in a person, lifted out and made into a thing you can point at — something a person can have, show, or put into food. Good describes; goodness is that quality packed into a noun.

把一個人身上「好」的那個部分抽出來，當成一樣看得見、可以指著說的東西。good 是形容詞，是貼在人身上的評語；加上 -ness 之後，那個評語被裝進一個罐子裡，變成一個名詞——一種可以擁有、可以流露、可以放進食物裡的實體。所以 goodness 不是「好的行為」，而是「好本身」：一個人做好事，是因為他身上有這個東西；一碗湯對身體有益，是因為湯裡有這個東西。有趣的是，這個字在現代英語裡最常出現的場合不是談品德，而是驚呼——My goodness!——那是它另一段歷史留下的痕跡，跟品德的畫面不完全接得上。

From Old English gōdnes, simply good + -ness, the suffix that turns an adjective into the quality itself (kind→kindness). The exclamation uses are a separate development: goodness stands in for God.

來自古英語 gōdnes（善良、美德、仁慈），就是 good 加上名詞字尾 -ness。-ness 的工作一向是把形容詞變成「那個性質本身」：kind→kindness、dark→darkness。所以 goodness 的字源沒有轉彎，它從一千年前到現在都是同一件事——把「好」變成一個名詞。真正需要另外解釋的是驚呼那一支：goodness 在那裡是替 God 站位的委婉說法，不是從品德延伸出來的。
