You can picture 'global' as zooming out until you see the whole globe at once — taking in everything together rather than one spot. From 'covering the whole world' it stretches to 'covering the whole of anything': a whole problem, or a whole computer system.

From 'globe' (the round Earth) plus '-al'; so 'global' originally means 'of the whole globe', and its other senses widen that 'the whole of it' picture.
