One way to hold it: food meeting hot oil. The pan is already shining and hot, the food goes in, and the heat works on it from the outside — that and that browned surface are the whole picture. The word for very young fish is not part of this; it only looks the same.

Fry (v.) "cook in oil" is from Old French frire, from Latin frigere "to roast, fry". Fry (n.) "young fish" is a separate word, from Anglo-French, probably from Old French frier/froier "to rub, spawn", with a possible link to Old Norse frjo/fraee "seed, offspring".

「煎炸」的 fry 來自古法語 frire、拉丁語 frigere（烤、煎）；「魚苗」的 fry 則是另一個字，來自盎格魯法語，可能出自古法語 frier／froier「摩擦、產卵」，也有一說連到古北歐語 frjo／fræ「種子、後代」。兩個字在英語裡拼法撞在一起，但來源各走各的。
