Something that belongs to a fable — a story-book creature or place. It is so far beyond ordinary life that the word later came to mean 'beyond ordinary' in size or in wonder.

Latin fabula 'story, tale' (from fari 'to speak') → fabulosus 'celebrated in fable' → English fabulous, first 'of the nature of a fable', later 'incredible, marvellous'.
拉丁文 fabula 是「故事、傳說」（來自 fari「說」），衍生的 fabulosus 意思是「在傳說中被講述的」。所以 fabulous 和 fable 是同一家人：先指「傳說裡的」，再因為傳說中的事物總是誇張離奇，滑向「大得誇張、好得離譜」。
