From the word’s history

From Latin enormis 'out of rule, irregular, extraordinary' — ex- 'out of' + norma 'rule, norm, carpenter's square'. Enormous is literally 'outside the norm': so far past normal size that it breaks the measure.

來自拉丁文 enormis「脫出常規、不合規矩、異常」；ex- 是「脫離」，norma 是「規範、標準、木匠的角尺」。enormous 字面上就是「超出常規」——大到跳出了正常的尺度。
