Picture a group of people held together by where they come from and how they live — shared ancestry, language, food, festivals, the things passed down rather than chosen. This word points at that shared inheritance. Everything else it does depends on who is doing the looking: from inside, it is simply your background; from outside, it can slide into meaning 'not like us'.
