A kind of animal or plant whose numbers have dropped so low that the whole kind could disappear. Think of a count going down and down until only a handful are left — the danger is not to one animal but to the whole species continuing to exist.

可以想成一個「數量一路往下掉，快要歸零」的畫面：某種動物或植物全世界只剩下很少的個體，再少下去這個物種就從此不存在了。要注意危險的對象不是某一隻動物的性命，而是「這一種生物還能不能繼續存在」——所以中文說「瀕臨絕種」，指的正是站在消失邊緣的那個狀態。
