From Latin ēlegantia “refinement, tastefulness”, related to ēligō “to pick out, select” (ex- “out” + legō “to choose”) — the sense of choosing carefully sits under the modern word: elegance is what's left after the right choices.
來自拉丁文 ēlegantia（精緻、有品味），與 ēligō（挑出來、選擇；ex-「出來」+ legō「挑」）相關，也就是 elect、select 的同一族。「精挑細選」這層意思很能照亮現代的用法：elegance 常常是「選對了之後剩下來的東西」——不是堆上去的，是選剩的。
