Think of a pond: the fish, the weeds, the insects, the water, the people who fish there — none of them stands alone, and pulling on one pulls on all the rest. `ecological` can be held as the word for looking at living things that way, as a web of connections rather than separate items. From that way of looking, a second use grows: if everything is connected, then damage spreads, and so `ecological` also comes to mark the people and actions that try to keep the web from being torn.
