One way to hold this word: a mass of animals on a road, with people behind them keeping them moving. Nobody in that picture is choosing their own direction. They are being pushed forward together, as one body, towards somewhere else. Everything the word does can be traced back to that scene — the animals themselves, the person doing the pushing, and, much later, a crowd of people moving the same way at the same time.

From the word’s history

Old English drāf carried both halves of the picture at once: it meant the action of driving and also the drove or herd itself, and it came from drīfan, to drive. The past tense drove comes from the same drāf, used as the past of drīfan. So the verb form and the noun are two pieces of one old word.

古英文的 drāf 一個字同時裝著畫面的兩半：它既指「驅趕這個動作」，也指「被趕的那一群」，來源是動詞 drīfan（驅趕）。而過去式 drove 也是從同一個 drāf 來的，當時是 drīfan 的過去式。所以今天的動詞形和名詞，其實是同一個老字的兩塊。
