You can picture a change you see at a glance and did not get time to brace for: the line on the chart does not slope down, it drops. Drastically is the word for a change with that much force behind it — big, fast, and leaving things clearly different from before.

From the word’s history

From Greek drastikos 'effective, efficacious; active, violent', from drao 'to do, act, perform'. In the 1690s it described medicines that acted with force; the modern 'extreme, severe' sense is recorded from 1808. The feeling that something is really acting on the thing is still inside the word.

來自希臘文 drastikos「有效的、強力的」，字根是動詞 drao「做、行動」。1690 年代它先用來形容藥效很猛的藥，到 1808 年才變成「極端的、劇烈的」。那種「真的有東西在用力作用」的感覺一直留在字裡，所以 drastically 講的從來不只是「多」，而是「用力到看得出來」。
