When something is someone's doing, that person made it happen or caused it.

Doing is the act of 'do' turned into a thing you can point at — the having-done-it. When you ask whose doing this was, you're pointing back to the hand behind it. From there it stretches two ways: the effort a doing takes ('take some doing'), and the whole bundle of things a person is busy doing ('doings').
可以想成 doing 是把動詞「do」凝成一個可以指著看的東西——「做出來這件事」本身。問「這是誰的 doing」，其實是把手指回那個動手的人。從這個畫面往外伸出兩條線：一條講這件事「做起來要花多少力」（take some doing），一條講一個人手上正在忙的那一堆事（doings）。
