    Not as good as you hoped or expected, so it leaves you feeling a bit sad or let down. It describes the thing itself — a result, a game, a trip, a piece of news — not the person who feels it.

    「disappointing」講的是「這個東西本身沒有你期待的那麼好」，所以它一定是跟「原本的期待」比出來的：分數 disappointing，是因為你本來想考更高；天氣 disappointing，是因為你本來計畫要出去玩。最容易跟它搞混的是 disappointed：disappointing 用在事情、結果、東西（The film was disappointing.），disappointed 用在人（I was disappointed.）。可以想成 -ing 是「它散發出來的感覺」，-ed 是「你心裡收到的感覺」。

You can picture the small drop between what you were hoping for and what actually turned up. Nothing terrible happened — the thing just came in lower than the picture you were carrying, and that gap is what the word points at.
