A detector is a machine or a piece of equipment that finds or measures something. A smoke detector listens for smoke in the air. A metal detector finds metal in bags or in the ground. A carbon monoxide detector watches for a dangerous gas you cannot smell. Though actually, a “lie detector” is supposed to catch signs that someone is not telling the truth — but many scientists say those machines are not as sure as films make them look. At home and at the airport the word is everyday; in a lab it can sound more technical (a particle detector, a motion detector).
