    「depend」幾乎不會單獨出現，後面差不多都接 on/upon。可以想成一件事「掛在」另一件事上面：那件事變了，這件也跟著變。它常有兩層意思——一是「由…決定」（Our trip depends on the weather 由天氣決定），二是「需要…才撐得住」（The baby depends on its mother 靠媽媽才活得下去）。單獨回一句 It depends. 就是「看情況」。

You can picture depend as one thing hanging from another. Move the upper thing and the lower one swings with it; take it away and the lower one falls. So It depends on the weather says the whole matter is hanging off that one line — whatever the weather does, this does too. It works the same with people: to depend on someone is to hang part of yourself on them. English almost always adds on or upon, because that point of attachment has to be named.

depend 可以想成「A 掛在 B 上面」：B 動一下，A 就跟著動；B 撤掉，A 就掉下來。所以說 It depends on the weather，等於說這件事的重量全掛在天氣那一條線上，天氣怎麼變，它就怎麼變。用在人身上也是同一個畫面——你依靠某個人，就是把自己的一部分掛在他身上。英文幾乎一定接 on／upon，因為那個「掛在……上面」的接觸點必須說出來。
