You can hold democratic as a room where every hand counts the same: the people themselves decide, by voting, instead of one boss deciding for them. That picture — power resting in the many, each voice weighed equally — runs from a whole country choosing its leaders, down to a small club making decisions together, and out to the spirit of treating everyone as equal.

Ultimately from Greek 'dēmokratia' = 'dēmos' (the common people) + 'kratos' (rule, power): rule by the people. That root — power held by the many rather than one — sits under every sense.
