To deflect means to make something change direction, usually by blocking or bouncing it away — like a goalkeeper deflecting a ball away from the goal, or a shield deflecting an arrow. People also use "deflect" about conversations: if someone deflects a question, they avoid answering it directly and turn attention somewhere else.
