Defecation is the name of the act: getting waste out of the bowel. It is the noun that sits next to the verb . You will see it on medical charts, in biology class, and in health . You will not hear it much in the street. Same as with the verb, everyday English prefers a poo or going to the toilet. In medical notes it is useful because it is exact and not childish, not rude — just formal.
