Picture a verdict that cannot be appealed. Somebody has been damned — judged, cursed, sent down, with no way back. That is the full weight of the word. Now picture people saying that verdict over a printer that will not start, or a bus that is late again. A curse used every day wears thin, and what is left is not a judgement any more, only heat. Most of what you will meet is that worn-down heat; the verdict itself survives in stories, songs and religious writing.

Wiktionary gives damned as the simple past and past participle of damn, which is why the judged reading is the older shape of the word.
