You can picture 'damn' as calling down a curse — pronouncing that something is condemned, doomed, no good. Almost every modern use is that heavy curse-word being thrown out to vent a strong feeling, not a real sentence to hell.

From Latin damnare 'to condemn, doom, inflict a penalty', from damnum 'loss, harm' (also the source of 'damage'). To 'damn' something was literally to pronounce judgement on it — a curse — and that condemning force is what every modern swear-use still carries.

來自拉丁文 damnare（定罪、判刑、宣判毀滅），字根 damnum 是『損失、傷害』（也是 damage 的來源）。damn 一個東西，本來就是對它下判決、下詛咒；今天所有髒話用法還帶著那股把它罵到底、判它死刑的勁。
