Dammit is a way of writing damn it as one word. People say it when they are — they drop a glass, they miss a bus, a plan falls apart. It is informal, and it is a mild swear: some families would not like it in the house; many adults use it without thinking. In writing you will also see damn it as two words; dammit in a story often tries to catch the sound of speech. Though actually it is already a softer stand-in for stronger curses — not polite, but not the strongest thing an English speaker can say.
