Cremains are what is left after a dead person’s body has been burned in a : the dry, grey, ash-like matter that a family may keep in an urn, bury, or scatter. The word is a soft blend that funeral workers made, so it sounds gentler than ashes. You will see it on funeral-home papers more than in ordinary talk. Though actually, it does not name a different substance — it is the same thing most people still call ashes. It is a respectful industry word, not a medical one, and it is only used after the body has been burned, never after a burial in the ground.
