A coven is a group of witches, or a meeting of them. In old stories a coven is often a set of thirteen, though actually people now use it more loosely for any small circle that calls itself a witch group, and sometimes, with a smile, for a tight group of women who seem to plan together. You meet it in folk stories, novels, films, and in some modern groups that practise witchcraft; you would not use it for an ordinary club or class. It comes from the same Latin idea as — people coming together — but a coven is not a .
