One way to picture it: a hard, stony thing that living creatures build up in warm sea water — pink-red branching rock you can hold in your hand, and the colour that comes with it.

English coral comes through Old French coral from Latin corallium, itself from Ancient Greek korallion, the name for the sea material used in jewellery; the colour word is simply the material's name reused.

英文 coral 經古法語 coral 來自拉丁文 corallium，再往上是古希臘文 korállion——一路都是「拿來做首飾的那種海中硬質材料」的名字。也就是說，這個字從頭到尾指的都是那個「東西」；顏色的用法是後來直接把材料名拿來當顏色名，就像我們說「珊瑚色」一樣，先有物，才有色。
