A consuming feeling is so strong that it fills your mind and leaves little room for anything else. A consuming ambition, a consuming guilt, a consuming love: you keep turning it over; it seems to eat your attention. It is a fairly serious, slightly literary adjective, not a word for a snack or a shopping trip. It is consume used as a describing word, but in this sense the “using up” is of your thoughts, not of food or money. People also use time-consuming as a set phrase meaning something takes a lot of time; that is the same family, though more everyday, and it is not this feeling-sense.
